Program Note
Mountain Echoes in Our Hearts draws inspiration from the soul-stirring beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Granite peaks with commanding vistas soar above verdant woodland, pastoral valleys and picturesque hamlets. This is the land of Frost and Thoreau, and their words whisper on the wind as our own generation finds beauty anew on hallowed pathways.
The music was composed as a wedding gift for my dear friends Jason M. Pavel and Marie E. Walcott, who share a passion for this beguiling landscape. The melody was fashioned from the couple’s initials. In this musical cryptogram, Marie’s initials M.E.W. become the pitches F-E-B, and Jason’s initials J.M.P. become C-F-Bb. They married at the historic Mount Washington Hotel, in the shadow of its legendary namesake peak. The instrumentation pays homage to the long tradition of brass instruments in the alpine world.
