Spring (2004)

"Spring" was written for dance choreography by Mary Chris DeBelina. The year-long collaborative process with the artist culminated on May 25, 2005 with a performance by the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble in Hanover, New Hampshire.

The piano piece is a fantasy on three musical ideas: a chord progression and its melodic contour, a rhythm and a three-note flourish. Each is altered and developed, taking turns in both the foreground and background.
