Seasons (2005)

Overview
Text

Life includes many juxtaposing emotions. These can change with the passing seasons, or exist simultaneously in a seemingly ironic fashion. Human inclination is to look for meaning in some conclusive ending that serves as a lens through which the past can be interpreted. Yet the real substance of life is day to day engagement with the world and the experience of each emotion that we breathe. Seasons presents five such snapshots.

“Origins” is an exclamation of exuberance for life and creation. Yet, the current state of affairs seems grim; the Iraq war still with no end in sight, genocide in Dar Fur, the September 2004 school hostage crisis in Russia. “Dove, Mourning” laments this violence in the world today. As the character Ruby says in the film Cold Mountain, “They call this war a cloud over the land. But they made the weather and then they stand in the rain and say ‘Shit, it's raining!’” “Why Do Trees Grow?” turns to interpersonal matters. In this confession of love, we find the protagonist struggling with her introverted personality and longing for the outwardly expressive power of music. In “The Wind”, she escapes from the chaos of life in her dreams and goes flying with the wind. The song focuses on these blissful moments of ecstasy, but the emotions are complicated, because of their rooting in a more bitter reality. “Overture” beckons in a season of hope, and affirms a new resolve to realize her dreams.
